I can’t say this enough, style is lawless! There are no rules when it comes to fashion. We can now wear white all year long. We now can mix patterns, fabrics, and textures, and even pair black with navy blue. However, I need to state the obvious. Just because something looks good on someone else doesn’t mean it will look good on you! Don’t go out and buy something just because it’s the trend. White, tight jeans or leather leggings don’t flatter everyone. It is important to stick with pieces that make you feel comfortable and confident.
You might say, “Shell, I thought the whole point of your blog was to teach us how to be brave in our fashion choices?” Yes, absolutely, it is. But I would never encourage anyone to wear something that just isn’t flattering for their body type. Miss Kim Kardashian is possibly the best example of someone who follows every trend out there but doesn’t take deep consideration of their body type.
So here are some tips on how to dress your body type:
Big Legs and Thighs: Fuller skirts (like A-line skirts) make your legs appear thinner. Avoid going to short with your skirts and dresses. Heels are another great way to slim down and lengthen your legs. When it comes to pants, avoid low-rise jeans. Become besties with boot-cut jeans. A slight flare below can really balance out the proportion.
Tummy Time: If you have a tummy, the best advice is to stay away from clingy fabrics. Choose thicker materials that tend to hold their shape to avoid your clothes from lumping. An empire silhouette is the most flattering for your body and you won’t even have to worry about sucking it in. Now let’s talk about Spanx. I can’t stress enough how amazing these are! They give you such a smooth and sleek look. They are money well spent!
Big Chest: My biggest pet peeve is seeing women who are big chested, wearing extra material along the neckline. This appears to instantly add about 5 to 10 pounds. Avoid tops that ruffle or drape on the top. Also, a well fitted bra is the most important when it comes to big chested ladies. I beg you to go get properly fitted and actually purchase the size of your fitting. Women with big breast tend to buy bras that are too big. STOP IT! STOP IT RIGHT NOW!
Large Hips: Wide leg pants are your new best friend. Avoid anything that hugs your knees and ankles. Go for a straight down cut. Heels (even a small heel) gives you a longer look. Heels tend to throw your shoulders back which makes you lengthen your torso for a longer, leaner look. As for your tops, have them sit either right on top or in the middle of your hip line. Avoid long, baggy shirts.
Booty Babe: If you have a big booty, I envy you. We don’t want to hide your butt, we just want to teach you how to dress accordingly for a flattering and classy look. Avoid patterns and bright colors for you bottom pieces. Lean towards darker colors when it comes to your skirts, pants, or shorts. High waist skirts with a tucked in top is always appealing. Adding a scarf to the mix will help balance out your look.
Big Arms: Great news. Big arms are the easiest to hide! There are so many style choices out there for you to choose. The only thing I would have to say, is to never go all the way sleeveless. Choose a cap sleeve instead. The longer the sleeves, the slimmer your arms appear.
Skinny-Minni: Now if you happen to have a similar body shape as mine, which is skinny and….well…not so curvy. The advantage to having this body type is that most clothes are designed to fit us . We just have to make sure that every piece of clothing fits us properly. It is easy to look frumpy when you are very thin. Another thing to keep in mind when you have very little curves, is to be mindful of clothes that make you look shapeless. Belts are a perfect accessory to add some curve.
