As a blogger, it can very hard not to compare the success of others to your own. We, as social media influencers, must be cautious of what we allow to define ourselves. Our self-worth shouldn’t be about the number of followers we have. We must value ourselves beyond social media and the perception we give others through it. I know I am not alone in the comparison game. The tendency to compare ourselves to others is as human as any other emotion, but it is a decision that only deprives us of joy in our lives.
Here are four ways to stop comparing yourself to others:
1.) Being grounded in your identity.
Your blog is not your identity. Your job does not define you. Our identity is so much richer. It is not based on our work or accomplishments. Start defining yourself by your own qualities and attributes.
2.) Know that you are unique.
You were meant to be different and no one can offer the world what you can. Celebrate who you are and the wonderful things about your life.
3.) You don’t need other’s approval.
Our value does not rely on other people’s approval or resources. The need for approval can negatively impact your own judgment. Relying on your own judgment is important in the development of your character. Genuine self-esteem removes the need to constantly seek validation from others.
4.) Appreciate others instead of envying them.
Instead of envying one’s success, consider how others can inspire you. Replace jealousy with motivation to make positive changes in your own life.
