The day before Josh and I moved to DC, my last night was spent with my best friend, Lauren. After watching our favorite show, Pretty Little Liars, something we did every Tuesday night together, we embraced and cried our eyes out not knowing the next time we would see each other again. Unfortunately it has been a little over a year since I have seen my dear friend but we are still as close as ever.
Here are a few things you can do to keep your best friends close while still being miles apart:
Let your bestie know that you are always thinking about her. Lauren and I have this never ending conversation. We text consistently. Even though the both of us are extremely busy, at the very least, one text is exchanged per day. Just a ‘good morning’ can make your day.
Send little notes in the mail. I try to send little postcards and small handwritten notes to my friends back home. I’ll even send small gifts that can fit into a envelope with a note that says, ‘thinking of you.’ Every time I get a little something in the mail it always adds a smile to my face!
Be silly together! Lauren and I are ALWAYS laughing. I use to joke that Lauren had a natural six pack due from our laughter, since we never stepped foot into a gym. Even though we are far apart we still send little videos or silly pictures of ourselves to make the other one laugh. We have this ongoing competition of who can send the ugliest picture of them self!
Try to keep up to date with her daily life. Even the smallest of things. When you learn about the random facts about each others day, you feel like your not missing out as much.
Keep sharing and talking about the bad days too. Even though your best friend might not be around to hold your hand or hug you on your low days, make sure to let her know what’s going in your life. Your best friend will be able to tell if something is wrong even by text message, so share and seek encouragement an uplifting words from each other. Let your BFF know that no matter the good days or the bad days, you are still here for them.
Remember her family. Ask about her family and things that are close to her heart to show her you care.
Make plans together. Lauren and I dream of the day we can see each other and laugh together again. Talking about future plans together will bring hope and excitement. Traveling can be extremely expensive so we use things to motivate us. For instance, “If I pass this test, I am coming to see you!”
Have girls night. Either Facetime or set a time to watch the same movie or show together while texting one another your reactions! Lauren and I like to talk about what happened on PLL.
What things do you do to help stay close to your best friends who are far away? I’d love to hear from you!
